Illuminated

Illuminated is a space of reflection, a space of gathering, and a space of remembrance for those 1.5 million souls lost during the Armenian Genocide.

Illuminated was an Art Center sponsored project as well as a design competition, where we worked with the Armenian community to design a memorial that would be built in Pasadena's memorial park.

Design

Illuminated intellectually, spatially, spiritually

The concept for this design came form the importance of fire within Armenian community and the use of it in ceremonies. Taking the idea of candlelight vigil and the visual representation I decided to create a space that promotes the leaving of the candles all year long but would become most activated on April 24th, the day of remembrance for the Armenian Genocide.

The wall, which stands at 11' tall has a pattern applied to it, that was derived from Armenian tapestries. This pattern becomes the ledges upon which candles can be placed and left behind.
